Worked example

Natural convection inside a cylindrical annulus

Laminar, steady natural convection in a concentric annulus for Pr = 0.7 and Gr = 5.0 × 10⁴. The original site notes two solutions associated with a bifurcation.

Problem definition and boundary temperatures for the concentric annulus.
Temperature contours and velocity-vector field for the second solution, showing two vortices.

Worked example

Transient conjugate heat transfer in a cavity

Heat conduction in the solid regions and natural convection in the enclosed air are solved simultaneously as the initially non-uniform temperature field evolves.

Problem definition at the initial time: air, copper and steel regions with their dimensions and temperatures.
Temperature contours and velocity-vector field at t = 6.0 s.

03

Worked example

Transient air–CO2 mixing

Air and carbon dioxide enter a baffled, slightly convergent channel through separate inlets. The CO2 inlet varies with time, while the air inlet has a spatially varying velocity profile.

Problem definition: geometry, baffles and the time- and space-dependent inlet conditions.

Tutorial and final visualization

Final transient visualization

Eight-second visualization of the evolving CO2 mass-fraction field and flow streamlines.

04

Worked example

Flow through an anisotropic porous filter

An inclined porous insert has a preferred flow direction and a transverse resistance ten times larger, producing a directional pressure loss and a visible deflection of the streamlines.

Problem definition: geometry, dimensions, boundary conditions and porous-medium settings.
